Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town placed north of the city of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, near the major highway the A1 (M), it has a populace of approximately 85,000 and was proclaimed as the first of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six consisting of six independent neighbourhoods, the earliest of which was finished in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Yet notwithstanding its seemingly new appearance, the town of Stevenage has an early heritage and sits near to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) road, built by the Romans ran, Stevenage was named "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Apart from its close proximity to the Roman road, artefacts found in the Stevenage area offer verification of its early story in long past, undocumented years. Indeed during building on the Chells Manor estate, a considerable hoard of more than 2,000 Roman silver coins was uncovered, which followed discoveries of numerous Saxon and Roman antiquities during the building of the New Town. The Saxons needless to say followed the end of the Romans and their settlement was founded around the place where the first real village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was put together, and a century or so later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town proper, when it was accorded its charter allowing it to hold a weekly market, and also in addition to this, an annual "fair", a celebration that's still held in these modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was begun in the 12th C, and then dramatically improved during the 15th century, when a clerestory was added as well as some extremely ornamental woodwork and carvings. The 1st Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this was around up until the late 20th C. A lot of the town's wealth came from those travelling on the Great North Road, with plenty of coaching inns being built in Stevenage to provide for the multitude of stage coaches which passed through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as 21 each day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the decline of the stage coach was at hand, in reality creating a slowing down of progression for the town.
