Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town located north of the city of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, adjacent to the A1(M) motorway, it houses a population of about 84,200 and was designated to be the first of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six consisting of six self contained neighbourhoods, the earliest of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Having said that in spite of its apparently new appearance, the town of Stevenage has an early the historical past and sits adjacent to where the Verulanium (Saint Albans) to Baldock Roman road ran, Stevenage was named as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Besides its nearness to the Roman road, artifacts unearthed in districts around Stevenage provide proof of its earlier history in long past, unrecorded times. In fact at the time of construction work on the Chells Manor area, a considerable hoard of over 2,000 silver Roman coins was exposed, which came after the discovery of several Roman relics at the time of the construction of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons of course followed the downfall of the Roman occupation and their settlement was founded near the area where the 1st proper village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was put together, and a century or so later in 1281 Stevenage became a town in the correct sense of the word, when it was issued its charter to hold a market every week, as well as, an annual "fair", a celebration that is still put on even today.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was first built during the twelfth century, and significantly upgraded in the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added as well as some remarkably ornamental carvings and woodwork. The first Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this remained up to the later part of the 20th century. The vast majority of the affluence of the town resulted from stage coach passengers on the North Road, with many inns becoming built in Stevenage to serve the multitude of stage coaches which passed through through the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as 21 per day). 1857 celebrated the arrival of the railway and the dying of stagecoaches was nigh, in reality creating a slow down of growth for the town.
