Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town based to the north of the capital and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the A1(M) motorway, it houses a population of about 80,000 and was designated to be the first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-1940's having six self contained communities, the earliest of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Then again notwithstanding its outwardly new look, the town of Stevenage has an early heritage and lies near to where the Verulanium (Saint Albans) to Baldock Roman road ran, it was listed as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Aside from its nearness to a Roman road, artefacts and relics discovered in the Stevenage local area supply proof of its early history in long past, unrecorded years. In fact during building work on the Chells Manor area, an important hoard of over 2,000 silver Roman coins was discovered, which came after the discovery of assorted Roman and Saxon antiquities at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons obviously came after the end of the Roman occupation and their settlement was founded around the area where the 1st actual village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was written, and almost a century later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town in the real sense of the word, when it was issued a charter to hold a weekly market, and also, a once a year "fair", a special event which is still held in modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was started in the 12th C, then was to some degree remodelled in the 15th century, when a clerestory was added and some remarkably elaborate carvings and woodwork. The original Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this was around up to the late twentieth century. The vast majority of the affluence of the town resulted from those travelling on the North Road, for lots of inns being established in the town to provide for the multitude of stagecoaches which passed through the 18th and 19th centuries (up to twenty one per day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the downfall of stagecoaches was at hand, in fact creating a slow down of growth for the town.
