Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town based north of the city of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, beside the A1(M) motorway, it boasts a population of approximately 80,000 and was designated to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the mid-1940's having six self contained communities, the earliest of which was completed in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Having said that irrespective of its outwardly new appearance, the town has an ancient heritage and was built close to where the Baldock to Verulanium (St Albans) Roman road ran, Stevenage was identified as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA Concise History of Stevenage - Apart from its proximity to a Roman road, antiquities discovered in areas around Stevenage offer verification of its earlier historical past in long gone, undocumented years. Indeed during building work on the Chells Manor area, a massive hoard of over 2,000 Roman coins was discovered, that followed finds of numerous Roman artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons obviously came after the downfall of the Roman Empire and their camp was established near the area where the 1st bona fide village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was produced, and then in twelve eighty one it became an real town, when it was given a charter to hold a weekly market, as well as, an annual "fair", an occasion which is still held in these modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was started in the 12th century, and to some extent improved during the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added and some very ornamental carvings and woodwork. The earliest Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this was around up until the late 20th century. A lot of the town's wealth came from those travelling on the North Road, with many inns being established in the town to provide for the many stagecoaches which passed through during the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as twenty one each day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the decline of stage coaches was nigh, in reality resulting in a slowing down of progress for the town.
