Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town located north of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, beside the A1 (M), it is home to a population of about 80,000 and was selected to be the very first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with six self contained neighbourhoods, the earliest of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Even so irrespective of its outwardly new appearance, the area of Stevenage does have an ancient heritage and stands close to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA Brief History of the Town - Besides its proximity to a Roman road, antiquities uncovered in districts around Stevenage give evidence of its earlier story in long past, unrecorded days. Indeed at the time of construction on the Chells Manor area, a very large hoard of over two thousand Roman silver coins was exposed, this followed discoveries of countless Saxon and Roman artefacts during the construction of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons obviously came after the downfall of the Roman occupation and their community was founded close to the spot where the 1st real village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was produced, and later on in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a proper town, when it was awarded a charter to hold a weekly market, as well as, a yearly "fair", an event that is still organised even today.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was built in the 12th C, and was somewhat remodelled during the 15th century, when a clerestory was added together with highly beautiful wood work and carvings. The 1st Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained up to the later part of the twentieth century. The majority of the town's prosperity resulted from those travelling on the North Road, with numerous inns being built in the town to provide for the large number of stagecoaches which came by throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as twenty one each day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the train and the end of the stage coach was at hand, in fact causing a slow down of expansion for the town.
