Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town placed to the north of the capital in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the A1(M) motorway, it houses a population of roughly 84,000 and was designated to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties with half a dozen independent communities, the earliest of which was finished in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). But in spite of its obviously new look, the town in truth has an early heritage and is built near to where the Baldock to Verulanium (St Albans) road, built by the Romans ran, it was referred to as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Aside from its closeness to a Roman road, remains and artefacts found in areas around Stevenage provide verification of its earlier history in long past, unrecorded times. Indeed in the course of construction on the Chells Manor estate, a significant hoard of more than 2,000 Roman silver coins was uncovered, which followed discoveries of a lot of Roman artifacts during the construction of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons naturally followed the collapse of the Romans and their community was built near the spot where the 1st true village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was written, and a century or so later in twelve eighty one it became a town proper, when it was issued a charter to hold a weekly market, and also, a once a year "fair", an occasion that is still put on in these modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was begun during the 12th C, and dramatically enhanced in the 15th century, when a clerestory was added as well as some remarkably decorative wood work and carvings. The original Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this endured till the late 20th century. Much of the town's riches resulted from travellers taking the North Road, with plenty of inns being established in the town to provide for the large number of stage coaches which travelled by throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as 21 every day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the railway and the demise of stagecoaches was nigh, in reality causing a slowing down of progression for the town.
