Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town positioned north of the capital within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, close to the A1 (M), it has a population of approximately 84,200 and was designated to be the very first of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six having six independent communities, the 1st of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). On the other hand regardless of its fairly new appearance, the area of Stevenage does have an ancient history and sits close to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, it was listed as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - As well as its closeness to a Roman road, artefacts unearthed in locations around Stevenage give evidence of its early history in long gone, unrecorded days. Indeed during house building on the Chells Manor area, an extensive hoard of more than 2,000 silver Roman coins was found, this followed finds of numerous Roman artefacts at the time of the construction of the New Town itself. The Saxons needless to say followed the end of the Roman Empire and their community was set up close to the spot where the 1st real village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was produced, and almost a century later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town proper, when it was given a charter to hold a weekly market, and also, a yearly "fair", a celebration that is still held even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was built in the 12th C, and somewhat enhanced during the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added as well as very elaborate carvings and woodwork. The earliest Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this existed until the late 20th C. Most of the the prosperity of the town resulted from travellers taking the North Road, with lots of coaching inns becoming built in the town to serve all the stage coaches that travelled by throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as 21 per day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the railway and the death of stage coaches was at hand, in reality causing a slow down of expansion for the town.
