Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town situated to the north of the city of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, adjacent to the A1(M) motorway, it has a population of roughly 85,000 and was chosen as the first of the 'New Towns' in the nineteen forties having half a dozen self contained estates, the first of which was completed in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Then again in spite of its outwardly new appearance, the town of Stevenage has an early the historical past and grew adjacent to where the St Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, it was described as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Potted History of Stevenage - Aside from its close proximity to a Roman road, antiquities discovered in places around Stevenage present proof of its early story in long past, unrecorded years. Indeed in the course of building work on the Chells Manor area, a massive hoard of over two thousand Roman coins was discovered, which followed finds of various Roman and Saxon artifacts at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons of course came after the fall of the Romans and their community was established around the spot where the first true village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was put together, and then in twelve eighty one it became a town proper, when it was accorded a charter allowing it to hold a market every week, and in addition to this, a yearly "fair", an occasion that is still organised today.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was commenced during the 12th century, then was significantly enhanced in the 15th century, when a clerestory was added along with very beautiful wood work and carvings. The very first Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this remained in existence until the late 20th century. The majority of the the affluence of the town came from travellers taking the North Road, with lots of inns being built in the town to serve all the stagecoaches which came by throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as twenty one every day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the end of stage coaches was at hand, in actual fact creating a slow down of growth for the town.
