Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town found north of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, close to the A1 (M), it boasts a population of around 84,200 and was chosen as the very first of the 'New Towns' in the 1940's consisting of 6 self contained neighbourhoods, the earliest of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). On the other hand regardless of its outwardly new appearance, the area of Stevenage has an ancient heritage and developed close to where the Verulanium (St Albans) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, Stevenage was listed as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Apart from its nearness to the Roman road, relics uncovered in the Stevenage local area give evidence of its earlier history in long past, undocumented days. Indeed at the time of house building on the Chells Manor estate, an extensive hoard of over 2,000 Roman silver coins was discovered, which followed the discovery of countless Roman artefacts at the time of the construction of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons naturally followed the fall of the Roman Empire and their settlement was established around the area where the first genuine village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was written, and some time later in 1281 Stevenage became a town in the real sense of the word, when it was awarded its charter to hold a weekly market, as well as, a once a year "fair", an event which is still held in modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was first built during the 12th C, and then greatly improved in the 15th century, when a clerestory was added and some highly decorative carvings and wood work. The earliest Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this existed up until the late 20th C. Much of the town's affluence came from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, for lots of coaching inns becoming built in Stevenage to provide for all the stage coaches which came by during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as 21 per day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the demise of the stage coach was nigh, in actual fact resulting in a slow down of progress for the town.
