Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town established to the north of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the A1(M) motorway, it boasts a population of roughly 84,000 and was designated to be the first of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six having six independent communities, the first of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Having said that despite its obviously new look, the area of Stevenage has an ancient heritage and sits close to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, it was labeled "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - As well as its proximity to the Roman road, remains and artefacts found in the Stevenage locale supply proof of its earlier history in long past, unrecorded days. Indeed during construction work on the Chells Manor area, an extensive hoard of more than two thousand Roman silver coins was found, that came after finds of many Roman artefacts during the construction of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons naturally followed the end of the Roman occupation and their settlement was built near the spot where the first actual village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was put together, and almost a century later in 1281 it became a town in the true sense of the word, when it was issued its charter to hold a market every week, and also in addition to this, a yearly "fair", a special event that is still held even today.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was built in the 12th C, then was extensively upgraded in the 15th century, when a clerestory was added as well as remarkably decorative carvings and wood work. The earliest Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this was around till the late twentieth century. The majority of the the wealth of the town resulted from those travelling on the Great North Road, with many inns becoming built in Stevenage to serve the multitude of stage coaches which passed through throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as twenty one per day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the railway and the dying of stagecoaches was at hand, in reality leading to a slowing down of growth for the town.
