Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town located to the north of the capital within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, beside the A1 (M), it has a populace of roughly 85,000 and was designated as the first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with six independent estates, the earliest of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). However irrespective of its comparatively new look, Stevenage does have an early heritage and grew close to where the St Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, Stevenage was identified as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Brief History of the Town - Besides its closeness to the Roman road, antiquities unearthed in the Stevenage area provide proof of its early story in long gone, undocumented years. Indeed during house building work on the Chells Manor estate, a gigantic hoard of over 2,000 Roman coins was discovered, this followed the discovery of assorted Roman and Saxon artifacts at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Saxons naturally followed the fall of the Roman occupation and their camp was founded near the area where the 1st proper village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and then in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a proper town, when it was awarded a charter to hold a weekly market, as well as, a yearly "fair", an occasion which is still put on even today.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was built during the twelfth century, then was significantly upgraded in the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added and some extremely ornamental carvings and wood work. The original Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this remained in existence up to the later part of the 20th C. The vast majority of the wealth of the town resulted from those travelling on the North Road, with plenty of inns becoming built in the town to serve the large number of stagecoaches that passed during the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as 21 every day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the end of stagecoaches was at hand, in fact causing a slowing down of expansion for the town.
