Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town positioned north of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, near the A1(M) motorway, it houses a population of approximately 85,000 and was chosen as the first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties comprising half a dozen independent neighbourhoods, the 1st of which was completed in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). However irrespective of its outwardly new look, the town does have an early history and sits adjacent to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) road, built by the Romans ran, it was known as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Besides its close proximity to the Roman road, remains and artefacts found in places around Stevenage present evidence of its early historical past in long past, undocumented days. Indeed during building work on the Chells Manor area, a huge hoard of more than 2,000 silver Roman coins was unearthed, this followed the discovery of numerous Roman and Saxon artefacts at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Saxons needless to say followed the downfall of the Roman occupation and their settlement was built around the place where the first actual village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was produced, and almost a century later in twelve eighty one it became a town in the true sense of the word, when it was granted a charter permitting it to hold a weekly market, and also, a once a year "fair", a celebration that is still held even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was commenced in the 12th century, then was considerably upgraded in the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added together with highly beautiful carvings and woodwork. The 1st Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this was around till the late 20th century. Almost all the town's wealth came from those travelling on the North Road, with many coaching inns becoming established in Stevenage to serve the great many stage coaches which passed through during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as twenty one per day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the railway and the decline of stage coaches was at hand, in actual fact causing a slowing down of progress for the town.
