Stevenage - Stevenage is a sizeable town established to the north of the city of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the major road the A1 (M), it is home to a populace of around 80,000 and was proclaimed as the 1st of the 'New Towns' in 1946 consisting of half a dozen independent estates, the 1st of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Even so irrespective of its seemingly new appearance, Stevenage has an early heritage and grew near to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was named as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Potted History of the Town - As well as its closeness to a Roman road, antiquities discovered in areas around Stevenage provide verification of its earlier historical past in long gone, undocumented years. Indeed during house building on the Chells Manor estate, a considerable hoard of more than 2,000 Roman coins was dug up, which followed finds of numerous Roman and Saxon relics at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons obviously followed the decline of the Romans and their community was founded close to the area where the 1st genuine village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was produced, and almost a century later in twelve eighty one it became a town proper, when it was accorded a charter to hold a weekly market, as well as, an annual "fair", a special event which is still organised to this day.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was first built in the twelfth century, then was appreciably improved in the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added along with very ornamental carvings and woodwork. The earliest Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained in existence till the late 20th century. The vast majority of the prosperity of the town came from travellers taking the Great North Road, with plenty of coaching inns becoming established in the town to serve the great many stage coaches which passed through during the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as twenty one per day). 1857 heralded the coming of the train and the death of stagecoaches was at hand, in fact causing a slow down of growth for the town.
