Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town located to the north of the capital and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, adjacent to the major highway the A1 (M), it houses a populace of approximately 85,000 and was proclaimed to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the mid-1940's made up of 6 independent estates, the 1st of which was completed in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Even so irrespective of its outwardly new look, the town of Stevenage does have an ancient heritage and sits near to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) Roman road ran, Stevenage was labelled "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - As well as its closeness to the Roman road, remains and artefacts discovered in the Stevenage region supply proof of its early history in long gone, undocumented years. In fact at the time of construction on the Chells Manor area, an immense hoard of over two thousand Roman silver coins was dug up, this came after finds of numerous Roman and Saxon antiquities during the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons obviously followed the fall of the Roman Empire and their settlement was set up close to the area where the 1st real village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was put together, and almost a century later in 1281 it became a town proper, when it was issued its charter which allowed it to hold a market each week, as well as, a yearly "fair", a celebration that is still organised in modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was built in the twelfth century, and was significantly upgraded during the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added together with highly ornamental woodwork and carvings. The 1st Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this persisted until the later part of the 20th century. The majority of the the wealth of the town resulted from those travelling on the North Road, for lots of inns becoming established in Stevenage to provide for the many stagecoaches which passed through during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as twenty one each day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the railway and the downfall of stage coaches was at hand, in actual fact creating a slowing down of expansion for the town.
