Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town positioned to the north of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, close to the major route the A1 (M), it houses a population of around 85,000 and was selected as the very first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties made up of half a dozen self contained communities, the first of which was completed in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). But despite its fairly new appearance, the town of Stevenage does have an early heritage and sits adjacent to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) Roman road ran, it was termed "Stigenace" in the 1086 Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - As well as its proximity to the Roman road, remains and artefacts unearthed in areas around Stevenage provide verification of its early story in long past, unrecorded days. Indeed at the time of building work on the Chells Manor area, a large hoard of more than 2,000 silver Roman coins was found, this followed discoveries of assorted Roman artifacts during the building of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons of course came after the decline of the Roman occupation and their settlement was built around the place where the first actual village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was compiled, and some time later in 1281 Stevenage became a town in the true sense of the word, when it was accorded a charter permitting it to hold a market every week, and additionally, an annual "fair", an event that is still organised in modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was built in the 12th century, and then to some degree improved during the 15th century, when a clerestory was added as well as incredibly beautiful carvings and wood work. The earliest Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this endured till the late twentieth century. Much of the town's affluence resulted from those travelling on the Great North Road, with lots of inns becoming built in the town to serve the great many stage coaches that passed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to twenty one per day). 1857 celebrated the arrival of the railway and the end of stagecoaches was nigh, in actual fact leading to a slow down of progress for the town.
