Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town based north of the city of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the A1 (M), it has a population of about 80,000 and was proclaimed to be the first of the 'New Towns' in the 1940's having six independent estates, the earliest of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). However in spite of its outwardly new look, Stevenage in reality has an ancient heritage and sits close to where the Baldock to St Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, it was described as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Apart from its close proximity to the Roman road, artefacts found in the Stevenage vicinity deliver evidence of its early story in long gone, unrecorded days. Indeed during construction work on the Chells Manor estate, an extensive hoard in excess of 2,000 Roman silver coins was dug up, which followed finds of numerous Roman and Saxon artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons obviously followed the fall of the Roman occupation and their settlement was built around the place where the first bona fide village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was written, and later in 1281 Stevenage became a proper town, when it was granted a charter to hold a market every week, and also, an annual "fair", a special event which is still put on even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was started in the twelfth century, and to some extent upgraded in the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added and some very beautiful carvings and woodwork. The first Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this existed up to the later part of the 20th C. The majority of the the affluence of the town resulted from those travelling on the Great North Road, with numerous coaching inns becoming established in Stevenage to serve the multitude of stage coaches that passed throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as 21 each day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the railway and the death of stagecoaches was at hand, in actual fact causing a slow down of progress for the town.
