Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town placed north of the city of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, near the major route the A1 (M), it houses a population of approximately 84,000 and was proclaimed as the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties consisting of 6 self contained estates, the 1st of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). On the other hand despite its apparently new look, the town of Stevenage has an ancient heritage and grew close to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) Roman road ran, it was called "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - As well as its closeness to the Roman road, remains and artefacts found in places around Stevenage supply verification of its earlier story in long past, unrecorded times. In fact during construction work on the Chells Manor estate, an immense hoard of more than 2,000 silver Roman coins was uncovered, that came after the discovery of a lot of Roman antiquities at the time of the building of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons of course came after the collapse of the Romans and their settlement was set up near the place where the first proper village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was written, and some time later in twelve eighty one it became a town in the correct sense of the word, when it was given its charter permitting it to hold a weekly market, and also, a yearly "fair", an event that is still held even now.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was first built in the 12th C, and then to some extent remodelled in the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added together with some extremely elaborate woodwork and carvings. The original Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this persisted till the later part of the 20th C. The vast majority of the riches of the town came from those travelling on the Great North Road, with many coaching inns becoming established in the town to provide for the great many stage coaches which came by through the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as 21 per day). 1857 heralded the coming of the railway and the demise of stagecoaches was at hand, actually leading to a slowing down of growth for the town.
