Stevenage - Stevenage is a rather substantial town located north of the capital in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, near the A1(M) motorway, it is home to a population of around 85,000 and was proclaimed as the first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties consisting of half a dozen self contained estates, the earliest of which was completed in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). However notwithstanding its outwardly new appearance, the area of Stevenage in reality has an ancient history and sits near to where the Baldock to Verulanium (St Albans) Roman road ran, it was identified as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Short History of Stevenage - Apart from its close proximity to a Roman road, antiquities uncovered in the Stevenage local area give proof of its early story in long gone, undocumented times. Indeed at the time of construction on the Chells Manor area, an extensive hoard of over two thousand Roman coins was unearthed, which followed discoveries of countless Roman and Saxon artifacts at the time of the building of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons needless to say followed the end of the Roman occupation and their settlement was built around the spot where the first proper village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was written, and a century or so later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became an actual town, when it was given a charter allowing it to hold a weekly market, as well as, a yearly "fair", an event that is still put on today.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was commenced during the twelfth century, and to some extent remodelled in the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added as well as incredibly elaborate carvings and woodwork. The first Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this persisted up until the late twentieth century. Much of the the prosperity of the town resulted from those travelling on the Great North Road, with numerous inns becoming built in the town to serve the large number of stage coaches which travelled through during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to 21 per day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the train and the end of stage coaches was at hand, in reality creating a slowing down of growth for the town.
