Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town placed to the north of the city of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, near the A1(M) motorway, it has a population of approximately 80,000 and was selected to be the first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties made up of half a dozen independent estates, the 1st of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). But irrespective of its ostensibly new look, the area of Stevenage has an ancient history and was built adjacent to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, it was labeled "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Apart from its proximity to the Roman road, artefacts discovered in the Stevenage local area deliver evidence of its early story in long gone, undocumented days. In fact in the course of building on the Chells Manor area, a considerable hoard in excess of two thousand Roman coins was found, which followed the discovery of many Roman and Saxon artefacts during the construction of the New Town. The Saxons of course followed the end of the Roman Empire and their settlement was built near the area where the first bona fide village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was put together, and some time later in 1281 Stevenage became a proper town, when it was accorded a charter to hold a weekly market, as well as, a once a year "fair", a celebration which is still held to this day.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was begun during the twelfth century, and to some extent remodelled during the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added as well as very ornamental carvings and wood work. The first Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this was around up until the later part of the twentieth century. The vast majority of the wealth of the town resulted from those travelling on the Great North Road, with numerous coaching inns becoming established in Stevenage to provide for the great many stage coaches that passed through during the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as twenty one per day). 1857 heralded the coming of the railway and the death of stagecoaches was at hand, in reality resulting in a slow down of expansion for the town.
