Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town situated to the north of the city of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the A1 (M), it houses a population of roughly 84,200 and was selected to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with six independent communities, the earliest of which was finished in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Having said that notwithstanding its fairly new look, Stevenage in truth has an early the historical past and stands adjacent to where the Verulanium (St Albans) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, Stevenage was described as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - As well as its nearness to the Roman road, antiquities unearthed in the Stevenage area offer proof of its early story in long gone, unrecorded days. Indeed during building work on the Chells Manor estate, an important hoard in excess of two thousand Roman coins was found, that came after finds of numerous Roman artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons of course followed the end of the Roman Empire and their settlement was founded close to the place where the first genuine village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and later in twelve eighty one it became a proper town, when it was issued its charter to hold a market every week, and in addition to this, a yearly "fair", a celebration that's still put on today.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was built during the 12th century, and was somewhat enhanced during the 15th C, when a clerestory was added as well as highly decorative carvings and woodwork. The earliest Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this remained in existence up until the late 20th century. Much of the town's affluence came from travellers taking the North Road, with many coaching inns being built in the town to serve the many stage coaches that passed by throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as 21 each day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the railway and the end of stagecoaches was at hand, actually causing a slow down of growth for the town.
