War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Aside from its nearness to the Roman road, antiquities uncovered in places around Stevenage give evidence of its earlier historical past in long gone, undocumented days. In fact at the time of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, an extensive hoard of more than two thousand Roman coins was discovered, that followed the discovery of varied Roman and Saxon relics at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Saxons obviously came after the fall of the Roman occupation and their camp was founded close to the place where the 1st true village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was written, and later in 1281 Stevenage became a town in the real sense of the word, when it was given its charter to hold a weekly market, and additionally, an annual "fair", a celebration that is still organised even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was started in the 12th century, and was to some degree upgraded in the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added and some highly elaborate carvings and woodwork. The original Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this persisted until the late twentieth century. Much of the the wealth of the town came from those travelling on the Great North Road, with plenty of inns becoming built in the town to serve the multitude of stage coaches that came by during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as 21 every day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the decline of the stage coach was at hand, in reality causing a slowing down of growth for the town.
