Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town established north of the capital in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, just off the major road the A1 (M), it boasts a population of around 84,000 and was proclaimed as the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the 1940's with six independent neighbourhoods, the first of which was completed in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Having said that despite its obviously new look, the town of Stevenage does have an early history and was built close to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, Stevenage was labelled "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - As well as its proximity to a Roman road, antiquities discovered in locations around Stevenage give proof of its early history in long gone, unrecorded days. Indeed during building work on the Chells Manor estate, a huge hoard of over 2,000 Roman silver coins was discovered, this followed the discovery of a significant number of Roman antiquities at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons of course came after the fall of the Romans and their community was established around the spot where the 1st real village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was written, and later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a proper town, when it was granted a charter to hold a market each week, and also in addition to this, an annual "fair", an occasion which is still organised in these modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was first built in the twelfth century, and to some extent upgraded during the fifteenth century, when a clerestory was added along with some remarkably ornamental carvings and wood work. The first Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this persisted up until the later part of the 20th C. The majority of the the riches of the town came from those travelling on the North Road, with plenty of coaching inns becoming established in Stevenage to provide for the large number of stage coaches which passed during the 18th and 19th centuries (up to twenty one each day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the train and the death of stage coaches was nigh, in fact creating a slowing down of expansion for the town.
