Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town situated to the north of the city of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, adjacent to the A1(M) motorway, it has a population of around 85,000 and was chosen to be the first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with half a dozen self contained estates, the first of which was completed in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Still regardless of its seemingly new appearance, Stevenage in reality has an early heritage and is built near to where the Verulanium (Saint Albans) to Baldock Roman road ran, Stevenage was described as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - In addition to its proximity to a Roman road, artefacts and relics found in areas around Stevenage provide evidence of its earlier story in long past, unrecorded times. Indeed at the time of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, a considerable hoard of more than 2,000 Roman silver coins was unearthed, this followed finds of several Roman and Saxon artefacts during the building of the New Town. The Saxons naturally followed the decline of the Romans and their settlement was established near the place where the 1st true village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was produced, and almost a century later in 1281 it became a town proper, when it was issued a charter to hold a market every week, and additionally, a yearly "fair", an occasion that is still organised even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was commenced during the 12th century, and then somewhat upgraded during the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added together with remarkably decorative wood work and carvings. The 1st Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained in existence until the late 20th century. The vast majority of town's affluence came from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, with lots of coaching inns being established in Stevenage to serve the many stagecoaches that passed by during the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as 21 every day). 1857 celebrated the arrival of the train and the death of stage coaches was nigh, in fact resulting in a slow down of progress for the town.
