But irrespective of its comparatively new look, the town of Stevenage does have an ancient the historical past and developed close to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, Stevenage was named "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Brief History of the Town - In addition to its close proximity to the Roman road, artifacts found in locations around Stevenage supply proof of its early history in long gone, unrecorded days. In fact at the time of house building on the Chells Manor area, a large hoard of over two thousand Roman silver coins was discovered, this came after discoveries of assorted Roman and Saxon artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons of course followed the demise of the Romans and their camp was set up around the place where the 1st genuine village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was produced, and almost a century later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a proper town, when it was awarded a charter enabling it to hold a market every week, and also, an annual "fair", a celebration which is still put on in modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was first built in the 12th C, then was to some extent enhanced in the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added as well as some extremely beautiful carvings and woodwork. The first Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this existed till the late 20th C. The majority of the the riches of the town resulted from travellers taking the Great North Road, with many coaching inns being established in Stevenage to serve the multitude of stage coaches which passed through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as twenty one each day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the railway and the demise of stagecoaches was at hand, in actual fact creating a slowing down of progress for the town.
