Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town situated to the north of the city of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, adjacent to the A1(M) motorway, it boasts a population of approximately 85,000 and was designated as the first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with half a dozen independent communities, the first of which was completed in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Then again despite its ostensibly new appearance, the town of Stevenage has an ancient history and evolved close to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, it was labelled "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA Potted History of the Town - In addition to its proximity to a Roman road, remains and artefacts uncovered in the Stevenage vicinity provide verification of its earlier history in long gone, undocumented years. Indeed during house building work on the Chells Manor area, a significant hoard in excess of 2,000 Roman coins was found, which came after the discovery of assorted Roman and Saxon relics at the time of the building of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons of course came after the collapse of the Roman Empire and their settlement was built near the spot where the 1st proper village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was put together, and later on in 1281 it became a town in the correct sense of the word, when it was awarded a charter permitting it to hold a market every week, and also in addition to this, a once a year "fair", a special event that is still put on in these modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was built in the 12th C, and was to some extent remodelled during the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added together with incredibly ornamental carvings and woodwork. The first Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this endured until the late twentieth century. Much of the the wealth of the town came from those travelling on the Great North Road, for lots of coaching inns being built in the town to serve all the stagecoaches which passed through through the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as 21 each day). 1857 heralded the coming of the railway and the end of the stage coach was at hand, in actual fact leading to a slowing down of progression for the town.
