Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town placed north of the capital within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, beside the A1 (M), it is home to a population of around 80,000 and was selected to be the first of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six consisting of 6 self contained communities, the earliest of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). However notwithstanding its apparently new appearance, Stevenage in reality has an ancient heritage and lies close to where the Verulanium (Saint Albans) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Besides its close proximity to the Roman road, artefacts and relics uncovered in the Stevenage area provide proof of its early history in long gone, undocumented years. Indeed at the time of house building work on the Chells Manor area, an enormous hoard of more than two thousand Roman silver coins was discovered, this came after finds of a lot of Saxon and Roman antiquities at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons needless to say followed the decline of the Roman Empire and their camp was set up near the area where the first real village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was put together, and a century or so later in 1281 Stevenage became a town in the true sense of the word, when it was issued a charter to hold a market every week, and also, a yearly "fair", an occasion which is still held in these modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was commenced during the 12th century, and dramatically upgraded in the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added and some extremely beautiful carvings and woodwork. The earliest Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this persisted till the late 20th C. Almost all the town's prosperity came from travellers taking the Great North Road, with many coaching inns becoming built in the town to serve all the stagecoaches that travelled through through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as twenty one every day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the railway and the downfall of stage coaches was at hand, in actual fact leading to a slowing down of progress for the town.
