Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town located north of the capital in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the major highway the A1 (M), it is home to a population of approximately 85,000 and was chosen to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six with half a dozen self contained communities, the 1st of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). But despite its outwardly new appearance, Stevenage in reality has an ancient heritage and was built adjacent to where the Verulanium (St Albans) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was named as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Besides its closeness to a Roman road, antiquities discovered in areas around Stevenage deliver evidence of its early historical past in long gone, undocumented years. Indeed at the time of building on the Chells Manor estate, a substantial hoard of more than two thousand Roman silver coins was found, that came after the discovery of varied Roman antiquities during the construction of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons naturally came after the downfall of the Romans and their community was established around the area where the first bona fide village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and later on in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town in the real sense of the word, when it was awarded a charter allowing it to hold a market every week, and also, an annual "fair", a celebration which is still held even today.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was first built in the 12th C, and was dramatically remodelled in the 15th C, when a clerestory was added together with some very beautiful woodwork and carvings. The first Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this remained up until the late 20th century. Almost all the the riches of the town resulted from travellers taking the North Road, for lots of inns becoming established in the town to provide for the multitude of stagecoaches that passed throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to 21 every day). 1857 heralded the coming of the railway and the dying of stagecoaches was at hand, in reality leading to a slowing down of progress for the town.
