Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town situated to the north of the city of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, beside the A1(M) motorway, it houses a population of approximately 84,200 and was chosen to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in 1946 made up of half a dozen self contained neighbourhoods, the first of which was finished in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Then again notwithstanding its apparently new appearance, Stevenage in truth has an early the historical past and stands near to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, it was noted as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA Short History of the Town - As well as its close proximity to a Roman road, antiquities unearthed in areas around Stevenage offer proof of its early history in long gone, unrecorded years. In fact during building on the Chells Manor estate, a gigantic hoard of more than two thousand Roman coins was found, that came after the discovery of a significant number of Roman relics during the construction of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons needless to say followed the end of the Romans and their community was established around the place where the first proper village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was produced, and a century or so later in 1281 it became a town proper, when it was granted a charter which allowed it to hold a market each week, and also in addition to this, a once a year "fair", a special event that is still held even today.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was begun in the 12th century, then was dramatically remodelled in the 15th C, when a clerestory was added and some very decorative wood work and carvings. The earliest Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this was around until the late twentieth century. The vast majority of town's wealth resulted from travellers taking the Great North Road, with many inns being built in the town to provide for all the stagecoaches which passed by during the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as 21 each day). 1857 heralded the coming of the train and the death of stagecoaches was at hand, in fact causing a slowing down of progression for the town.
