Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town established to the north of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the A1 (M), it boasts a population of about 84,200 and was chosen as the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the mid-1940's made up of six independent neighbourhoods, the first of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). But despite its apparently new appearance, the town does have an ancient heritage and sits close to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) Roman road ran, it was called "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA Concise History of the Town - Besides its close proximity to a Roman road, artefacts discovered in the Stevenage region present verification of its early history in long past, undocumented days. In fact at the time of construction on the Chells Manor area, a significant hoard in excess of 2,000 Roman silver coins was discovered, which came after the discovery of many Saxon and Roman relics at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons naturally came after the end of the Roman Empire and their settlement was built near the area where the first bona fide village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and then in twelve eighty one it became a town proper, when it was granted its charter to hold a weekly market, and also, an annual "fair", an event which is still put on today.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was built during the 12th century, and greatly improved in the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added as well as some remarkably beautiful wood work and carvings. The 1st Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this existed up to the late twentieth century. Most of the town's prosperity resulted from travellers taking the Great North Road, with many inns being established in Stevenage to provide for all the stage coaches which came by during the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as 21 each day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the railway and the demise of stage coaches was nigh, in reality leading to a slowing down of growth for the town.
