Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town to be found north of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, beside the A1 (M), it boasts a population of about 80,000 and was selected to be the very first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with half a dozen self contained communities, the first of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Having said that notwithstanding its obviously new appearance, Stevenage in reality has an ancient heritage and was built near to where the St Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, it was identified as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA Brief History of the Town - Aside from its nearness to a Roman road, remains and artefacts found in districts around Stevenage give proof of its early story in long past, undocumented times. Indeed at the time of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, a significant hoard of over two thousand Roman silver coins was found, which came after discoveries of a considerable number of Roman and Saxon artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town. The Saxons of course came after the fall of the Roman Empire and their camp was founded around the place where the 1st bona fide village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was compiled, and a century or so later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town proper, when it was awarded its charter to hold a weekly market, as well as, an annual "fair", a special event that's still held to this day.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was first built during the twelfth century, then was considerably enhanced in the fifteenth century, when a clerestory was added along with incredibly elaborate carvings and woodwork. The 1st Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this remained in existence up until the late 20th century. A lot of the town's riches resulted from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, for lots of inns becoming established in the town to provide for the multitude of stage coaches that travelled by through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as 21 each day). 1857 heralded the coming of the train and the end of stage coaches was nigh, in actual fact leading to a slowing down of expansion for the town.
