The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was put together, and then in 1281 Stevenage became an true town, when it was granted a charter to hold a weekly market, and in addition to this, an annual "fair", an event which is still organised to this day.
