War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Apart from its proximity to a Roman road, remains and artefacts discovered in the Stevenage locale give proof of its earlier story in long past, undocumented times. In fact in the course of house building on the Chells Manor area, an enormous hoard in excess of two thousand Roman silver coins was exposed, this came after discoveries of numerous Saxon and Roman artefacts during the construction of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons of course followed the decline of the Roman occupation and their camp was founded near the spot where the 1st real village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was put together, and then in 1281 Stevenage became an real town, when it was granted a charter permitting it to hold a weekly market, and also, an annual "fair", an occasion which is still put on in modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was built during the 12th century, and was to some extent remodelled in the fifteenth century, when a clerestory was added as well as some very beautiful carvings and woodwork. The earliest Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this remained up until the later part of the 20th century. The majority of the the wealth of the town came from those travelling on the North Road, with lots of coaching inns becoming built in the town to serve all the stagecoaches which came by throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as twenty one every day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the train and the dying of stage coaches was at hand, actually resulting in a slow down of progression for the town.
