Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town located north of the capital within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, adjacent to the A1(M) motorway, it houses a population of roughly 85,000 and was chosen as the first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with 6 independent estates, the earliest of which was completed in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Yet despite its seemingly new look, Stevenage has an ancient the historical past and stands near to where the Baldock to St Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, Stevenage was referred to as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA Brief History of Stevenage - As well as its closeness to the Roman road, antiquities unearthed in districts around Stevenage deliver evidence of its earlier story in long past, unrecorded days. Indeed at the time of construction on the Chells Manor area, a very large hoard in excess of 2,000 silver Roman coins was discovered, this came after discoveries of several Roman relics at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Saxons naturally followed the fall of the Romans and their settlement was set up around the place where the 1st actual village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and almost a century later in 1281 it became a proper town, when it was given a charter to hold a weekly market, as well as, an annual "fair", an occasion which is still held today.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was built during the 12th C, and was dramatically enhanced in the 15th century, when a clerestory was added along with highly ornamental wood work and carvings. The earliest Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained in existence until the late 20th C. The vast majority of the prosperity of the town came from travellers taking the Great North Road, with many coaching inns becoming built in Stevenage to provide for all the stage coaches which travelled through through the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as twenty one per day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the train and the demise of the stage coach was at hand, in reality leading to a slow down of progression for the town.
