Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town established north of the capital and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, adjacent to the major route the A1 (M), it is home to a population of about 80,000 and was designated to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with 6 independent estates, the earliest of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Then again regardless of its seemingly new appearance, Stevenage in reality has an ancient heritage and was built adjacent to where the Baldock to St Albans (Verulanium) road, built by the Romans ran, Stevenage was named as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Aside from its close proximity to the Roman road, antiquities found in locations around Stevenage present evidence of its early historical past in long gone, unrecorded years. In fact in the course of construction on the Chells Manor area, a huge hoard in excess of two thousand silver Roman coins was uncovered, this followed finds of various Saxon and Roman artifacts during the construction of the New Town itself. The Saxons naturally came after the demise of the Romans and their camp was built close to the place where the 1st proper village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and later in twelve eighty one it became a town in the correct sense of the word, when it was accorded its charter allowing it to hold a market each week, and in addition to this, a yearly "fair", an event which is still held even today.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was commenced during the 12th century, and was somewhat improved during the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added and some incredibly ornamental wood work and carvings. The first Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this was around up until the later part of the twentieth century. Almost all the the wealth of the town resulted from travellers taking the North Road, with many coaching inns being established in the town to serve the many stagecoaches that travelled by during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as twenty one each day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the railway and the demise of stagecoaches was nigh, in fact causing a slow down of progress for the town.
