Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town found north of the capital and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, adjacent to the A1 (M), it boasts a population of around 85,000 and was proclaimed as the first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with half a dozen self contained neighbourhoods, the first of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Even so notwithstanding its apparently new appearance, the area of Stevenage does have an ancient history and stands close to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA Potted History of the Town - Apart from its close proximity to the Roman road, antiquities uncovered in places around Stevenage present proof of its earlier story in long past, unrecorded years. In fact in the course of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, a massive hoard in excess of two thousand Roman coins was discovered, which came after discoveries of numerous Roman antiquities during the construction of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons obviously followed the fall of the Roman occupation and their settlement was established near the area where the first true village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was produced, and then in 1281 it became a proper town, when it was issued a charter to hold a weekly market, and in addition to this, an annual "fair", a celebration which is still organised today.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was built in the twelfth century, and significantly remodelled in the 15th century, when a clerestory was added together with very elaborate carvings and woodwork. The earliest Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained until the later part of the 20th C. The majority of the the riches of the town came from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, with lots of coaching inns being built in the town to provide for all the stage coaches which passed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as 21 per day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the decline of stagecoaches was at hand, in fact leading to a slow down of progress for the town.
